Work and D&D Update

I didn’t get the supervisor position at work, and my hours and bonuses are still being cut.  Money is tight right now, and I really need to trim my expenses and pick up extra hours where I can.  I will also continue my search for a better job, although nothing promising has shown up on Monster lately.

I am also retaking the reigns of my D&D group, because reports have been coming my way that Dave has not been successful as a Dungeon Master thus far.  He has personal and family issues right now, wich I feel are limiting his ability to run the game well.  I will be starting my new campaign on the first Sunday in May, and we shall meet every Sunday thereafter for four hours.

I am using much of the Quietville Material I published here, with a few important changes.  Chiefly, I am changing the pantheon to a dualistic system, with two primary deities, a god of light, and a god of darkness, and also some kind of neutral nature deity who will play a lesser role in the campaign, as this particular campaign will focus primarily on the battle between the gods of light and darkness. I am taking there names from the video game Fable, Avo being the god of light, and Skorm being the god of darkness.  I haven’t yet decided what name I will use for the goddess of nature; possibly something archetypal like “Gia” or “Mother Nature”.  I will post more updates here as the game design progresses.

My work week is finally over.  It is time for me to relax and enjoy my weekend.  This week also marks the end of a two week pay period, when our commissions and bonuses are calculated.  I feel like I did fairly well.  Hopefully my paycheck will reflect that feeling.

I am also sad to note the passing of Gary Gygax last week.  Gary Gygax was best known as the creator of the Dungeons & Dragons game, and an inspiration to players and dungeon masters everywhere.  He will be sorely missed by us all.

I am currently awaiting the release of the 4th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook, scheduled for this May.  I have been playing 3rd edition since it’s release, and am anxious to see the new game.  I am curious as to how well it will fare in the market.  I hope that wizards has done a good job with this new edition, and achieves there goal of attracting a new generation of players without alienating there core fan base, and ruining the game.  I will post a review of each 4th edition core rule book shortly after they are released.

New Job at Intermedia Marketing Solutions

Before I have even worked a single day at Hoss’s, I have already quit.  The reason is that I have been offered a better job at Intermedia Marketing Solutions.  My job will involve taking incoming calls from current and potential Verizon and  Direct TV customers.

Unfortunately, this will mean the end of my run as Dungeon Master for our D&D group.  I will be working every weekday evening from 5pm to 11pm.  I plan to ask Dave, the most experienced and enthusiastic member of our D&D group, to take over as Dungeon Master in my absence.  Hopefully a spot on day shift will become available in the near future.

Ben the Trader

I have decided to elaborate on the Village of Quietvilleby delving into some of the important characters there a little deeper.  I will start out with Ben the Trader in today’s post.

Bio

Ben the Trader was born the son of a chieftain of a nomadic clan in the Sylvan Vally.  He was educated as a minstrel, an art prized by his tribe, but he grew bored, and left his people to roam the lands for a time.  In his adventures, he befriended many other clans.  He came to live among the wild races, elves, dwarves and gnome, and learn there languages and ways.

In his travels he had many adventures, and made many contacts.  After his father passed away, he decided to retire from adventuring.  He leveraged his inheritance, along with the contacts he had made over the years, into a successfull career as a traveling merchant.

After accumulating a significant sum of money, and encountering many dangers along the road, Ben decided to settle down and set up a permanent outpost for his business ventures.  Thus he founded the village of Quietville.  Ben is now married, expecting his first child, and serves as the mayor of Quietville.

Physical Description

Ben the trader is a balding, slightly over weight, middle aged man.  He has an impressive handle bar mustache, which is starting to show some grey.  He usually dresses in fine fabrics in fashionable colors for the season, and a fine woolen or fur cape.  He has a taste for expensive clothing and jewelery, and can always be seen wearing his new gold wedding band, and his gold family signet ring on his right hand.  Much of his clothing is embroidered with his personal seal, which is the image of a ruby.   He walks with a limp in his left leg, and uses a cane, which also doubles as a club when necessary, which he is quite handy with.  He usually caries one or more ornate daggers in his belt, and carries a hand crossbow concealed beneath his tunic.

Personality

Ben is a friendly, likable man, with a sharp wit, and a quick sense of humor, although he some time lacks common sense.  He is quick to make Friends, and proves a loyal Allie.  He is not wise in the ways of governing a village, but he is smart enough to know this, so he relies heavily on the advice of the local clan elders in making laws.  He is generous, and supports the cause of local druids whenever possible, as he is also a nature lover.  He is a curious person when it comes to magic, and has never ending questions for traveling magicians that pass through town.  He is also an accomplished composer of string music.

His most important allies include the wild elves, the druids, the church of Pelor, and the wild human clans

His most hated enemies are the orcs and goblinoids, and the bandit clans.

The Village of Quietville

I have been working on some new ideas to use in my Wednesday night D&D campaign.  I am writing a new town that will be used as a home base during the early part of my campaign.  I am calling this town Quietville until I can think of something better.

History

This town was founded by a traveling merchant, Ben the trader, who built the first trading post here.  He would broker deals between the elf and human tribes that hunted in the woods to the north, and the dwarves that mine in the hills to the east.  He also built the first tavern and boarding house across from his trading post, as well as a market for traveling vendors. 

He later opened up a quarry to the south, and rented land for farming in the west.  Over the years he became quite prosperous and wealthy, and eventual acquired enough wealth to hire a nearby warrior tribe to serve as guards in his settlement.  He also hired a great gnome wise-man to come act as judge in any disputes that would arise in town.

However, these were dangerous times.  A failed robbery attempt by Orc bandits took place, in which Ben the Merchant was gravely wounded.  To this day he still uses a cane and walks with a limp.  For this reason, he hired Theodoric, a Half-Orc ranger, as his personal bodyguard.  He also appointed Theodoric’ brother, Crag, as sheriff, and ordered him to organize and train a village militia to help ward off an further Orc attacks.

All has been peaceful for a while, But Kolear, captain of the Orc bandits, has yet to be brought to justice.  Crag, sheriff of Quietville, has offered up a reward for anyone who can find the secret Orc bandit hideout, and bring Kolear to  justice.  Rumors have been going around that the Orc hideout can be found somewhere northwest of the village, among some old ruins.

Recent Events

Ben  the Merchant’s popularity and respect among the local tribes has increased recently, due to his recent marriage to Rose of the Wild, the queen of a popular local clan.  It has recently been announced that they are expecting there first child.  As a gift to his new bride, Ben has constructed an extravagant villa for her, on a small hill overlooking the village.

Ben has also recently earned the favor of the church of Pelor, as he has just finished construction of a grand temple dedicated to the sun god’s honor.  The church will soon be sending a delegation of priests to service the temple.  They also plane to open a martial school for paladins on the site, as they have long been seeking to move there school away from the distractions of the bigger cities in the empire in the north east.

A new thorn in the side of the sheriff and his guards has sprung up recently.  The spoiled and bored children of some local merchants are attempting to form a thieves guild in the village.  Crag is determined to put a stop to this, but has had a tough time of it thus far, as these missguided young men and women have been protected by there wealthy families.
